They get food from the bottoms of the bodies of water that they are found in. It doesn’t mater if that happens to only be a few inches deep or many feet. You may step on them when you are in shallow bodies of water and not even realize it.
They are able to find their food all over since they consume plants as well as dead organisms that are found in the water. Both seem to be quite abundant in a variety of locations.
